York is a thriving city with a well-established all year round tourist industry. The out of town shopping and business areas of Monks Cross and Clifton Moor have been a boom to the city, yet have still left a flourishing City Centre.
Although much of the railway-engineering sector has diminished over the recent years, most of the technical, planning and development work of the railway's structure is housed in the various offices of Network Rail, GNER, Arriva Trains and Jarvis located close to the railway station.

With the completion of the M1 link road around Leeds joining the M1 and A1 roads together now means York to London is either travelled on dual carriageway or motorway and has brought York to Leeds in less than 30 minutes. York's centre can be entered by various roads leading from a full outer ring road system, a system which encompasses the out of town centres which is attractive for business expanding or relocating.
Since the early 1990's, York has seen some major changes by way of residential housing development right across the city. This is primarily due to the desire to live in York and commute via the improved transport facilities to other destinations, including London.
